There has been a lot of discussion about GLP-1 medications and their role in weight management. Beginning July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare beneficiaries may have access to certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.
This program is designed to provide temporary access to qualifying medications for eligible individuals while Medicare continues to evaluate long-term coverage options.
What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a CMS demonstration program scheduled to run from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. The program allows eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries to access certain GLP-1 medications prescribed specifically for weight loss.
Under the program, eligible beneficiaries may pay a flat $50 copay per fill for covered medications.
Which Medications Are Included?
The program currently includes:
• Wegovy®
• Zepbound®
These medications must be prescribed for weight-loss purposes and are subject to eligibility and prior authorization requirements.
Who May Qualify?
Eligibility is based on Medicare enrollment status, body mass index (BMI), and certain medical criteria established by CMS.
Not everyone will qualify, and approval requirements must be met before coverage can be provided.
Important Things to Know
The program operates outside of a beneficiary's standard Medicare Part D coverage.
Prior authorization is required.
Coverage is temporary and currently scheduled to end on December 31, 2027.
Beneficiaries should review their Medicare coverage annually to ensure they maintain access to the benefits and medications they need.
